He is using machines intended for acute use to prolong lives of those with ESRD. But most centres still don’t even have machines for acute renal failure. The treatment is complex and expensive. Intermittent peritoneal dialysis, every few weeks or months, is a short term holding option used by some - but holding to wait for what miracle?

And in 1963 transplantation is not better - azathioprine was first used in 1962, and 50% survival to 1 year wasn’t reported till 1965, after probably hundreds of deaths. Failures generally did not return to the very limited dialysis programmes. 10 year survival passed 50% only 20 years later.
